Poems by Doreen Murdin

Silence

Silence, peaceful silence,
Peace Shattered

Car door slams
Gravel crunches
Front door bangs

Boots scrape
Breath hisses
Violence erupts
Hands throttle

Heart thumps
Teeth rattle
Bones crack
Blood trickles

Front door bangs
Gravel crunches
Car door slams

Lives shattered,
Silence, deathly silence.

Twitter

Although still dedicated to working with Dainaproject, this site has been a little neglected of late. But we have found Twitter and hope that we will now give this site a new lease of life.

encouragement

Today we received a copy of a letter expressing the writer’s gratitude for the Daina Book. The letter was full of compliments and we were delighted. It got me thinking how much pleasure we all get from a smile or a vote of thanks or even the smallest amount of praise. When the women you are working with are at their lowest, when their self esteem is at rock bottom, just a word of encouragement can make all the difference. Make time for a smile and a friendly word and make someones day.

Valentine

He may break your heart, but that is the risk that you take if you are in love.
But if he breaks your bones, that is a risk too far and that is not love

Choices

It would seem that in order to provide consistency of service, in any given area, currently there is often only one programme of support available to woman who have experienced Domestic Abuse. Although it is laudable to wish to provide consistency is this not denying the wide diversity of women that Domestic Abuse affects? We all have different learning styles, cultural needs, aims, and abilities. To assume that “one size fits all” is to deny a service to those women who do not find that the programme on offer is working for them. It is difficult with ever increasing financial constraints but it is important to be open to alternative programmes and to work creatively to ensure that there is appropriate support available to all those who require it.

We are delighted to learn that DaiNa has been reviewed in NSW Australia. This was a very positive review and we are extremely pleased to hear that our colleagues down under have found this useful. Good Luck to you all and Take Care

Important

I know that it is difficult, money is tight and there are cuts happening everywhere, please try to ensure that there is continued help for women who are experiencing or have experienced Domestic Abuse. Not just those who are being supported by women’s refuges, but all women, who need and want support. Make it a priority. Thank you

Fear

I found this quote today and thought some of you might find it helpful.

Fear is that little darkroom where negatives are developed.

Men may suffer too

Recently we have been challenged by a colleague for writing a book about Domestic Abuse that is aimed solely at women. In truth at that time he had not read the book. For those who may have similar concerns, we would like to point out that we state in the book that we are aware that men suffer Domestic Abuse but that our own experience lies with working with women. Many of the exercises in the book are transferable however and would work equally well with a male group, others may need some creative adjustment. Alternatively may we respectfully suggest there may be an opportunity here for someone to write a similar book with men in mind. We would be interest to hear from you if that is the case. Take Care All
